Kirk Herbstreit
Kirk HerbstreitRecognized widely as one of the best college football minds of his generation, Kirk Herbstreit has been an ESPN college football studio analyst since August 1996 when he joined host Chris Fowler and co-analyst Lee Corso on College GameDay. Herbstreit joined ESPN in September 1995 as a college football sideline analyst for ESPN2. Herbstreit has also been an analyst for ABC's Saturday Night Football series, broadcast televisions first-ever weekly primetime college football game, with Brent Musburger, analyst Bob Davie and reporter and Lisa Salters. He is also a game analyst for ESPN's Thursday night game with commentator Chris Fowler.
Herbstreit's experience as a former standout Ohio State quarterback lends itself to providing insight and entertaining analysis. His talents were quickly noticed, as after just two seasons he was nominated for a 1997 Sports Emmy Award as televisions top studio analyst. In January 2004, Sporting News magazine ranked Herbstreit and fellow GameDay personalities - Lee Corso and Chris Fowler - as 2003's "Most Powerful Media Personalities in Sports."
Since 1993, Herbstreit also has been host of Herbie and Benz, a daily sports radio show on The Fan Sports Radio 1460 in Columbus, Ohio, the Ohio State University flagship station, and also co-hosts Wall to Wall, a weekend sports wrap up show for WBNS-TV, also in Columbus. In addition, he served as a radio sideline reporter for the Ohio State University Football Radio Network during the 1993 and '94 seasons.
Herbstreit is a 1993 Ohio State graduate with a degree in business administration where he was a four-year Buckeye letterman as a quarterback (1989-92). As the starter and team captain during his senior season of 1992, he passed for close to 2,000 yards in an option-oriented offense, guiding OSU to an 8-3-1 mark, second place in the Big Ten, a Florida Citrus Bowl appearance and a No. 18 final AP ranking. For his efforts, he was named team MVP and most motivational player. Known for his quickness and scrambling skills, he had TD runs of 32 yards (Wisconsin) and 72 yards (Minnesota) as a junior. He was Ohio State coach John Cooper’s first signee.
Chris Spielman
Chris SpielmanBorn October 11, 1965 in Canton, Ohio, Chris Spielman gained a lot of attention as an All-American at Washington High School. Heavily recruited by major colleges, he came to play for coach Earle Bruce at Ohio State in 1984. He went on to become a two-time All-American with the Buckeyes and a three-time All-Big Ten selection. One of the most intense and motivated players in Scarlet and Gray history, Chris is OSU's all-time leader in solo tackles and is among the the school's all-time leading tacklers overall with 546. The Detroit Lions selected Chris with the 29th pick in the 1988 NFL draft. During the following eight seasons, he earned Pro Bowl honors four times. He also was the first player to lead the Lions in tackles seven straight seasons. Chris played two years with the Buffalo Bills before joining the Cleveland Browns after the 1998 season.
When his wife, Stefanie, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999, Chris took a year off to be at home with her and the kids. Many people were struck by his dedication. He even shaved his head (to match his wife's hair loss during chemo) to help his kids understand. He returned to football the following year, only to suffer a career-ending neck injury. Chris was also interviewed for the Ohio State head football coach's job in 2001 after John Cooper was let go. In addition to hosting a local radio show 5 days a week, Chris also covers college football for ESPN Television. He and his wife are involved in fundraising through the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
